Our Story
Nativeland Market Square (NMS) is a brainchild of the founder's lived experience as an international student who experienced firsthand the challenges of establishing oneself in a foreign country informed the concept of Nativeland Market Square (NMS).
When Onyii first arrived in Canada, she struggled to find familiar dishes and flavors that she was used to back home. She spent the first one month feeding solely on instant noodles, a meal she didn't enjoy, because it was the only familiar food available. Although there were several meal options available on campus, they were mostly foreign meals, and Onyii found it challenging to adapt to these new flavors as she experienced some allergic reactions trying some of them.
She lost count of the number of times she walked away from paid meals she bought in the University Dining Commons on campus. The more she craved for familiar dishes, the more the cravings and thoughts left her feeling homesick and lonely.
Onyii searched for a sense of home through familiar food and flavors that incorporated her cultural identity, heritage and community.
This experience inspired her to establish Native Land Market Square, a cultural journey that brings African flavours to Canadian dinner tables, while fostering community and a social hub for cultural exchange
